It’s important to understand how the Brazilian Keratin process works so you know what to expect when you go to a salon for hair straightening. Tribeca Hair Studio uses the Marcia Teixeira process which usually takes 2-4 hours depending on the length and thickness of the hair. The process is as follows:
Washing the hair
- The hair is washed with a special shampoo twice to open the cuticles so the keratin can seep in.
- The shampoo then remains in the hair from anywhere between 10 – 15 minutes.
Rinsing the hair
- There is no conditioner needed or applied while the hair is rinsed.
- The hair will start to feel rough and dry, signifying that the cuticles are ready to receive the keratin.
Drying the hair
- After the hair is done soaking, it is time for drying.
- The hair will continue to feel rough and dry.
- Drying the hair prepares it for the application of the keratin solution.
Applying the solution
- The hair is parted in 4-6 sections and the solution is applied half an inch away from the scalp in small amounts.
- Once the solution is applied to all of the hair, the excess is combed out.
- After application hair is left for 10-20 minutes.
Flat Ironing the hair
- Once hair has absorbed the solution it is blow-dried completely.
- The hair is then split into 4-6 sections once more before the flat iron is used.
- The flat iron goes over each section of hair 5-8 times.
